diabetes is a disease in which the body
does not produce or properly use insulin
insulin is a hormone that is needed to
convert sugar starches and other food
into energy needed for daily life the
nervous system is a network of
specialized cells that communicate
information about an organism
surroundings and itself it processes
this information and causes reactions in
other parts of the body
many people with diabetes eventually
develop some form of nerve damage a
condition known as diabetic neuropathy
peripheral neuropathy is the most common
form and affects the extremities high
blood sugar can injure nerve fibers
throughout your body
but nerves in your legs and feet are
damaged most often let's take a closer
look inside to see a major cause of
diabetic neuropathy when blood glucose
levels become too high
it can cause the vessels to constrict
and reduces the supply of oxygen to the
nerves
when nerve systems are deprived of
oxygen it causes the axons to sever ties
with surrounding nerves and
communication signals are lost
modern approaches to diabetes management
include blood glucose level monitoring
insulin therapy diet and exercise
assessment smoking cessation blood
pressure monitoring prescription
medications and vitamin supplements
